Hanifen Co Inc has operated in the Des Moines area since 1923, when Jim E. Hanifen opened it as an automotive repair shop and towing service. His son relocated the business to a 10-acre site off I-80 in 1959, and it passed to third-generation owner Julie Hanifen before John Kearse and Matt Hurd purchased the company in 2017. The property today includes 10 acres, eight buildings, and a multi-level dock with a camera security system. Hanifen's light and medium-duty fleet includes 13 flatbed wreckers, a medium-duty wrecker, and a one-ton self-loading wrecker, while its heavy-duty fleet includes eight heavy-duty wreckers, three semi tractors, and a 75-ton rotator with a tow rating of 80,000 pounds.
